Problem #1
Many loopholes exist in the drinking age such as religious purposes, government related work, education purposes, and medical issues that are often taken advantage of. The unfortunate truth is evident; underage drinking is apparent and will continue to be a hassle, unless the drinking age is lowered, resulting in less of a desire/temptation to get ahold of alcohol. The rate of drunk driving is highest among 21 to 25 year olds, 23.4 percent (Get Involved, MADD 1). Drunk driving, that could have be prevented with some simplistic education and structure in the legal system. Some states allow alcohol to be possessed/consumed by minors if accompanied by an adult (twenty-one or over). Religious ceremonies, such as taking communion wine, is another example in which it is perfectly legal for underage drinking. Developing a plan to get rid of the “need” to drink at younger ages than permitted is the best solution. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act passed, while with the best intentions, has proved to only bring problems, “The minimum drinking age of 21 in the U.S. appears to be not only ineffective but actually counter-productive” (Minimum Drinking Ages Around the World 3). Absentminded choices are made every day, with or without alcohol, and innocent lives are being taken from this earth as a result.
Drinking Age Debate
Kids are hiding from the law, which has made the drinking age limit more dangerous. It is risky and not safe. Moderation must be taught, these are explained in this video, "Drinking Age Debate".
The parents in this video believe if the age of consumption of alcohol had been eighteen, their son would have gotten calls for help much sooner than it was reported. Since the minimum was twenty-one, the college students were afraid to call in fear of what would happen to them; not once did they think about the young man that had just been put through complete agony.
